Fear is a useful thing. In an article in the New York Times Magazine a couple of months ago, Robin Marantz Henig described current research exploring the complex links between temperament and the brain. It was a fascinating article, but what struck me is that the more we learn about the psychology of fear, it seems like we become less able to predict how it will affect any given individual.

When it comes to my RMITs, however, there were many whom I found more interesting than most, some that were more entertaining, some that were more inspiring than others, and some who were just so nice and helpful that you had to love them just a little bit more because of the sheer size of their hearts.

In a letter thanking me for writing The Richest Man in Town, Jim Oelschlager, the richest man in Akron, Ohio, wrote, “Wow! What a spectacular book! My prediction is that it will be on the best seller-list soon.” Every writer loves to hear those words, and as they say, from Jim’s lips to God’s ears. He went on to say the book should be a textbook for graduate schools of business. That was a big wow for me. Oelschlager, who is unquestionably one of the most inspirational men I have ever interviewed, brought so much power to my book because of his extraordinary personal story.
